The Frame Project -The frame was a prototype design conceived and designed by one of the valley's leading semiconductor capital equipment manufactures. It was one of CDS's most challenging projects due to the complexity of compound angled holes through complex surfaces plus having to hold tight tolerances during manufacturing and brazing. Using SolidDesigner, we were able to bring together all aspects of the design process without 2D drawings - a completely paperless manufacturing process! CDS was able to take their solid file into our engineering stations and proceed forward very quickly due to the ability to visually interact with the assembly in a solid format.

The Holographic Project - CDS's role in the IBM Alamaden Research Center's research project began shortly after the preliminary solid design model had been completed. The timing of their project allowed CDS to effect the manufacturing process before the final project release. CDS had introduced to IBM Research, an aluminum braze technology, on an earlier aluminum vacuum chamber project that would serve the holographic project in the area of

dampening vibration from a surface mount plate through the legs to the main body of the tripod.

CDS manufactured all the parts in the aluminum tripod weldment in house, along with many others associated with the project. We designed and built a fixture that was needed to ensure dimensional integrity through the brazing and plating process. We put into place a modular manufacturing process that allowed for the monitoring of each segment for strength and accuracy before moving on to the next phase.

We stayed physically involved with the tripod around the clock, with manufacturing, dip brazing, hard black anodize plating process, and inspection prior to delivery of the tripod. CDS, along with its well established outside vendor relationships (brazing and plating) were able to complete the job in less than eight days and deliver the tripod project, late on a November evening, to an enthusiastic group of IBM scientists.
